Humane Society donations instead of wedding favors?

I’m thinking of donating in my guests names to the Humane Society instead of doing wedding favors (the little candies on your plate when you arrive). I’m going to have plenty of other food, plus a chocolate fountain if they have a sweet tooth. Does anyone know how to go about doing this? I thought it was a good idea. The idea is already getting put down by two different people that I know. One says that the little favor you leave on the plate is a ‘thank you’ so I have to leave it. Another says that most people probably won’t believe that I actually gave the donation.

1. it would probably be simpler to make one large donation in the name of the wedding and then have place cards printed up that say a donation has been made to the Humane Society on their behalf. On a personal note I think that this is a wonderful idea
