New Orleans Wedding!?

I'm getting married in New Orleans in October, and have been brainstorming about different ways to make it special. I'd love opinions on wedding colors, decorations, favors, invitations, little touches to the ceremony and reception, etc. etc. We are getting married in a gorgeous old Catholic church and having the reception at a plantation (they take care of food too.) So I have the major issues worked out, but I know it's the details that really make a difference....I'd love to incorporate customs from the local culture, etc. Any and all opinions most welcome! Thanks! I don't know why you would assume that New Orleans doesn't mean something to me just because I don't live there, that's really rude and judgemental. My family is from there originally, and has done extensive volunteer work since Katrina. Plus, my religion is important to me, and they have some of the oldest Catholic churches in the country. I was simply asking for ideas---not your opinion on whether or not I have the 'right' to have my wedding there----get a life!

  1. Do you actually live in Louisiana? Sounds like you don't. Your wedding should be somewhere that means something to you not just something you saw from a post card.
  2. What about a ragtime band? I'm not from New Orleans though, so I don't know.
  3. I'm from Louisiana and whenever I tell someone that, they instantly think of Mardi Gras. Why not make that your theme??? Choose rich golds, purples, and greens for your theme. It's Mardi Gras season so if you're in the area you'll be able to pick up a boatload of favors and decorations (wait a few weeks and get 'em on clearance). If you wanna get everything here rather than transport it, you can find the stuff all over New Orleans all yr long! You could invite your guests to a Mardi Gras Coronation Ball instead of a plain old "reception". Instead of invitations to your wedding, send out invites from your Krewe (A Krewe [pronounced in the same way as "crew"] is an organization that puts on a parade and or a ball for the Carnival season.) You could use Mardi Gras music for the march of the bridal party (The Mardi Gras Mambo http://youtube.com/watch?v=hC9vgfvffeM) and have them toss mardi gras beads while they parade down to the alter. If you'd rather your bridesmaids carry flowers, you could have your flowergirl & ring bearer toss the beads! Your guests will be so excited. Their very own parade!!! If you think this is too casual for the ceremony, have your bridal party do this as they enter the reception... or should I say Your very own Ball! If I get married during (or around Mardi Gras) I'd love to do this! 4. I am getting married in New Orleans at the St. Louis Cathedral in March of 2009. I'm not from Louisiana but my fiance is. New Orleans is beautiful! I can see why you would want to get married there. I thought about having the mardi gras colors as the wedding colors but then decided against it. I am still using purple as one of my colors though. Things to make it special would be to have a cajun style buffett, give out personalized mardi gras beads as favors. Have a praline maker at the reception. We are using the Fleur di Lis and the holy trinity as our theme for the entire event. I am sure your wedding will be beautiful!!!
